The Public Service Commission of South Carolina is seeking comment from South Carolina citizens before July 15th, 2022 on the proposed 864 area code overlay. If you're in the 864 area--which covers Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Pickens, Oconee, Greenwood, Laurens, Cherokee, Union, Abbeville, Saluda, McCormick, and Newberry Counties--and have an opinion on the area code overlay, the PSC wants to hear from you!
Here's what an area code overlay means for you as a consumer: if you currently have an 864 number, your phone number won't change if this overlay is approved. If you apply for a phone number in the future, you may get a number with a different area code than the current 864 code. Either way, if this is approved, 10-digit dialing will be required in the affected area--meaning that, no matter whether you have an 864 area code or the new code, you'll have to dial 1 before entering the rest of the number. The area code overlay, which has been proposed by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), has not been approved yet--this is your opportunity to speak up and let the Commission know your thoughts.
Consumers interested in filing comments or letters of protest can do so by emailing their comments or a completed Letter of Protest form to contact@psc.sc.gov or by sending the completed form to 101 Executive Center Drive, Suite 100, Columbia, SC 29210. If you have any questions, please reach out to the PSC at 803.896.5100 or at contact@psc.sc.gov.
